The Royal School of Church Music (RSCM) is delighted to announce the appointment of Baroness Hayman of Ullock as its new Chair.

A member of the House of Lords since 2020 and Shadow DEFRA spokesperson, Sue Hayman is the former Labour Member of Parliament for Workington (2015-2019) and has been a longstanding member and former Chair of the Parliament Choir. She has been a keen singer and passionate about church music since her childhood.

Commenting on her appointment, RSCM Vice Chair Andrew Morgan says:

“We are delighted to appoint Sue from a strong field of candidates and look forward to working with her as we approach our Centenary in 2027. Sue’s enthusiasm for our mission, church music and our critical work in promoting the flourishing of church music at parish level and amongst young people shone through in the process. She has a clear appreciation of the value of our work and can see the potential we can unlock for future generations.”

Baroness Hayman said:

“I am thrilled to be given the chance to join and chair the RSCM’s Council with its diverse range of experience and a wide range of professional backgrounds and a common cause which unites us all. I look forward to working with our outgoing Chair Phil Taylor, who will be a hard act to follow and with our Director Hugh Morris. Meeting staff, volunteers and those who support us across the country and internationally will be fascinating and enriching. We have a rich history, a vital role to play in the Church of England and beyond and I hope I can make a useful contribution to that work.”
